Welcome to the memorial page for

Carol Hinds Speicher

January 28, 1930 ~ December 14, 2016 (age 86) 86 Years Old
Carol Hinds Speicher, age 86, a resident of Ross Township and most recently of Sunrise of McCandless, passed away on Wednesday December 14, 2016. Born 01/28/1930 in Bellevue PA, Carol began a lifetime of faithful service at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Bellevue, and graduated from Bellevue High School. Despite the loss of her father at a young age, Carol's ambition and her mother's stalwart support led her to the University of Pittsburgh, in an era where college was not at all common for a young woman. Carol blossomed at Pitt. Carol was inducted into the university's Hall of Fame for Drama and Activities. Carol also flourished in Greek life at Pitt. She joined the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, and served as Pan-Hellenic President of all Pitt sororities and fraternities. Carol earned her Bachelor's Degree in Education and worked as a 3rd grade teacher in the North Hills School District for 11 years. This inspired her daughter Diane, who is a 3rd grade teacher herself today (in the Northgate School District) and taught for several years in the very building were Carol attended school. In later years, Carol would return as a substitute teacher. She is still remembered fondly by multiple generations of former students. Shortly after college, Carol met her husband Donald Speicher and settled in Ross; they remained married for 54 years. Carol eventually left full time teaching to raise two daughters, Sally and Diane. She later became the incredibly loving grandmother of Caroline, now 14. Caroline went on to attend Eden Christian Academy in the same classrooms at the Berkeley Hills School where Carol had taught during her career. Carol was the daughter of Charles Newton and Betty "Mimi" Hinds of Bellevue, and was preceded in passing by her sister, Betty (Robert) Mueller. Carol is survived by her husband Donald Speicher; daughter Sally Speicher; daughter Diane (Patrick) Maxwell; granddaughter Caroline Maxwell; as well as seven nieces and a nephew. A brief celebration of life service for immediate family members and close friends will be held at McDonald - Linn Funeral Home, Avalon PA (412-766-7000), date and time still to be determined. A private burial will follow. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial contribution are respectfully asked to consider a donation to the University of Pittsburgh in Carol's name. There have been few souls as kind, faithful, talented, affable and witty as Carol Hinds Speicher, and she will be dearly missed.
