Hazel Grace Pinto

Hazel Grace Pinto, age 82, of Emsworth passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2023.    

  Hazel was memorable but humble. Everywhere she went, she knew someone who was always happy to see her. No matter how long ago she met someone, they remembered her kindness. Throughout her life, she sparked many smiles. She was easy to talk to and great at listening and understanding. These and other skills that came naturally to her made her an incredible nurse to patients at hospitals around Pittsburgh—a city she was so proud of as a medical center.    

  Hazel had a love of medicine at a young age and aspired to be a nurse. She started her career in caring as a candy striper at Allegheny General Hospital as a teenager and went on to graduate from the former St. John’s Nursing School in Brighton Heights. A registered nurse for over 40 years, she spent her last days where she served others for over two decades at Heritage Valley Sewickley (formerly Sewickley Valley Hospital) surrounded by coworkers who fondly shared memories of their time helping others and each other. Her kindness had truly come full circle and was repaid in compassion, caring, and mercy.   

  While Hazel tirelessly cared for countless patients throughout her career, she was also a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother to her family—another source of pride and smiles for her. She enjoyed spending time with them, whether it was during an outing or just sitting on the porch and taking in the yard and garden.   

  Hazel was born on September 30, 1940, and was the daughter of the late Walter and Minnie Graham.   

  She is survived by her beloved husband, Walter E. Pinto, Jr.; four loving children, Edward Pinto, Mark (Steph) Pinto, Stephanie (Tom) Stever, and Regina (Ryan) Merkey; two grandchildren, Ruby (Eli) Pinto and Bill Pinto; one sister, Carol Byrnes, and five nieces.    

  Family and friends will be received on Friday, February 3, 2023, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the McDonald-Linn Funeral Home (529 California Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15202). A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Union Dale Cemetery.
